ATLAS Open Data Tutorial

Where:

3179/R-E06 at CERN

Welcome to the first tutorial on ATLAS Open Data! This four-day event is intended to provide information for a variety of audiences:

  • The first two days focus specifically on Open Data for Education and Outreach. This portion is meant to be accessible to those with an undergraduate understanding of physics, and should be particularly useful for those interested in making use of the Open Data for creating teaching materials.
  • The second two days focus on Open Data for Research. This portion is particularly intended for researchers (theorists or phenomenologists, for example) or students (advanced undergradate, masters, or PhD students) who wish to use the Open Data for scientific publications.

Before the event, we recommend that attendees become familiar with basic shell commands, git, python, and notebooks). The HEP Software Foundation offers self-study courses on these topics, and there will be a "Software Basics Training" Sep 3–5 and a "Python for Analysis" tutorial on Sep 11. For the Open Data for Research, basic C++ is also recommended.

The workshop material can be run on publicly available resources like mybinder, colab, or SWAN (for those with a CERN account). With a simple web browser we expect attendees will be able to complete any exercises and follow along themselves. For more complex operations, it might be necessary to have your own computing resources and storage; this will be discussed during the workshop.

This tutorial will be held in person, hosted by IdeaSquare at CERN. We anticipate running a virtual tutorial in the near future.

We will have a dinner at Lugia Academy in Meyrin on Tuesday, Nov 25th. The restaurant is a short 15-20 minute walk from the tutorial venue.

If you need housing in the area, you are welcome to book a CERN hotel room or a room in one of the hotels nearby.

Registration is now full. If you would like to attend, please contact the organizers and we can see about an opportunity. If you have registered and are unable to attend, please withdraw your registration or contact the organizers for help.
