A classification scheme (due to Mathur, Mukhi and Sen - MMS) for two dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) will be presented. It is based on the ingredients of the torus partition function of a CFT viz. the characters. A CFT is labelled by two non-negative integers [n, l] ; n is the number of characters and l is what is known as the Wronskian index. The infinite classification problem for all 2d CFTs is now recast into many finite classification problems: one for each pair of [n, l]’s. Previous work in the literature on the classification of n = 2 CFTs will be reviewed. The final classification of [3, 0] CFTs, which was recently achieved, will be presented. Work towards the classification of [3, 3] CFTs will be presented. Recent work on meromorphic CFTs which are n = 1 CFTs may also be in the talk if there is enough time.
